This entry represents members of the TCP-1 chaperonin family, which includes Chaperonin and T-complex protein 1 (TCP1) subunits. These proteins function as molecular chaperones, assisting in the folding of proteins upon ATP hydrolysis. The Chaperonin subunits, found in archaea, bind unfolded polypeptides and have weak ATPase activity. The TCP1 subunits, found in eukaryotes, are components of the chaperonin-containing T-complex (TRiC), which mediates the folding of proteins such as actin and tubulin. The TRiC complex also plays roles in telomere maintenance and ciliogenesis by regulating the assembly of the BBSome complex.
