Definition
The Trace Amine-Associated Receptor (TAAR) family includes G-protein coupled receptors that are predominantly expressed in the olfactory epithelium. They are known to bind trace amines, which are biogenic amines found in very low concentrations in mammalian tissues. While some TAARs are orphan receptors with unknown ligands, others are activated by specific trace amines such as beta-phenylethylamine, p-tyramine, octopamine, tryptamine, and trimethylamine. These receptors are implicated in various physiological functions, including olfaction and the detection of social cues. The exact roles of TAARs in vertebrates remain speculative, but they are thought to be involved in neurotransmission and innate behavioral responses.
