OverviewNCBI Gene
This gene is a member of the Nei endonuclease VIII-like gene family which encodes DNA glycosylases. The encoded enzyme participates in the DNA repair pathway by initiating base excision repair by removing damaged bases, primarily oxidized pyrimidines. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2012]

Antibody and autoantibody relevanceSeroatlas analysis
Seroatlas reads NEIL1 as an antibody target. Whether an autoantibody or antibody against NEIL1 could matter depends on whether native NEIL1 is physically reachable, whether the body needs it intact, and whether it acts in a disease-relevant tissue.
NEIL1 is annotated as predominantly intracellular. Intracellular proteins are common autoantibody markers, becoming visible to the immune system after cell injury or altered processing, but are usually markers of disease rather than direct drivers.
Annotation status
The present source text does not explicitly label NEIL1 as an autoantigen. Seroatlas presents hypothesis context only and does not manufacture a known-serology claim.
