OverviewNCBI Gene
This protein is a member of the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family. The KAP proteins form a matrix of keratin intermediate filaments which contribute to the structure of hair fibers. KAP family members appear to have unique, family-specific amino- and carboxyl-terminal regions and are subdivided into three multi-gene families according to amino acid composition: the high sulfur, the ultrahigh sulfur, and the high tyrosine/glycine KAPs. This protein is a member of the high sulfur KAP family and the gene is localized to a cluster of KAPs at 17q12-q21. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Whether an antibody against KRTAP2-4 can act on the native protein depends on physical access: surface and secreted proteins are reachable by circulating antibodies, intracellular proteins usually are not.

Antibody and autoantibody relevanceSeroatlas analysis
Seroatlas reads KRTAP2-4 as an antibody target. Whether an autoantibody or antibody against KRTAP2-4 could matter depends on whether native KRTAP2-4 is physically reachable, whether the body needs it intact, and whether it acts in a disease-relevant tissue.
KRTAP2-4 is annotated as predominantly intracellular. Intracellular proteins are common autoantibody markers, becoming visible to the immune system after cell injury or altered processing, but are usually markers of disease rather than direct drivers.
Annotation status
The present source text does not explicitly label KRTAP2-4 as an autoantigen. Seroatlas presents hypothesis context only and does not manufacture a known-serology claim.
